Family, in Their Own Words

One person’s recollections can span decades of family life. Several relatives may remember the same home, person or event in their own unique way, each contributing details that bring life to a family story. This service gives those memories space to develop, with historical research adding context and depth to the video keepsake.

Your Family’s Story combines three hours of research and preparation in total with three 45-minute filmed conversations. The sessions can follow one person’s experiences in depth or bring together contributions from multiple family members. Research into the agreed people, places and events provides context and prompts more specific questions.

The conversations explore how family life was experienced and remembered. Different accounts are preserved as perspectives, with personal recollections distinguished from details supported by historical records.

You receive a lightly edited film that brings the recorded conversations together into a family record, preserving the voices, expressions and connections that give the history its personal meaning.

What Your Family’s Story includes:

Research and Preparation to Shape the Interviews
Three hours in total cover research into the agreed people, places and events, plus interview preparation. This work develops informed questions and useful prompts, connecting family recollections with historical context.

Professional Video and Sound Recording

A Lightly Edited Family History Film
The recorded conversations are brought together into an accessible family record. Sound levels are balanced and obvious interruptions tidied up, while each storyteller’s meaning and perspective are preserved.

Your Family’s Story Package

3 × 45-minute filmed conversations
plus 3 hours of research and preparation in total
$1,495

Your package can explore one person’s memories across three sessions or bring together the perspectives of multiple family members. Before work begins, we agree on the participants, the family-history focus and how the conversations will be arranged.

Background research uses your existing family information and relevant historical sources to shape the interview questions. Its purpose is to add context and prompt detailed recollections, rather than provide a separate genealogy investigation or verify every remembered event.

The price includes background research, interview preparation, professional video and sound recording, light editing and private digital delivery. The conversations are brought together into a family-history film that preserves each contributor’s voice and perspective. Extensive documentary editing or incorporating photographs and home videos can be discussed separately.

Recording can take place at your home, the Breadcrumbs studio in Adelaide or at suitable locations agreed beforehand. Any travel, location or other costs are explained and approved before they are incurred.

A Conversation, Not a Performance

You do not need a script, a polished story or a perfect memory for dates. Gentle questions help you find a starting point and follow the details that matter, at a pace that feels comfortable.

A photograph, familiar object or another person’s recollection can help bring a memory into focus. There is room for laughter, reflection and different versions of a shared experience.

You choose what to discuss. You can pause, take a break, skip a question or leave a subject alone. The aim is to preserve a recognisable person telling their story in their own way.
