A Conversation, Not a Performance
People sometimes worry that they will not know what to say, tell the story in the right order or remember every detail correctly. None of that is required.
A Breadcrumbs interview is a calm, gently guided conversation. Thoughtful prompts help memories surface, while photographs, letters and familiar objects can provide natural starting points. The storyteller can pause, return to something important or leave a subject alone.
The aim is not to create a flawless performance. It is to preserve a recognisable person speaking in their own way, including the expressions, laughter, pauses and small details that written records cannot capture.
There is no need to cover an entire life. One well-told memory can become a lasting part of a family archive.
Bring a personal or entire family story to life in a bespoke documentary film. We combine in-depth interviews with photographs, home videos, music and meaningful locations to create a richly layered portrait. You receive a professionally produced film, delivered privately to watch, share and treasure for generations.

An Experience to Enjoy and Remember
The interview process can be conducted at your home, at Breadcrumbs Archive CBD location, or an agreed upon place of significance. It is designed to be an easy and genuinely enjoyable occasion in its own right. Familiar stories lead to laughter, photographs bring forgotten details back and one memory often opens the way to another. There is time to pause, reflect and follow the conversation wherever it naturally leads.
These moments and memories captured are shaped into a beautiful, lightly edited video keepsake that preserves the storyteller’s voice, expressions and personality. Natural warmth and spontaneity remain at the heart of the finished recording, giving family and friends something special to watch together, share privately and return to over time.
How Your Memory-Capture Project Takes Shape
Tell Us What You Hope to Preserve
Start with a person, occasion, period of life or remembered story. A general idea is enough for the first conversation.
Choose the Right Approach
Breadcrumbs will help you decide whether the story suits Story Capture, a fuller Life Story Interview, Your Family’s Story or a Family Legacy Film.
Make a Plan
The people involved, interview focus, recording format, location, deliverables, timing and price are confirmed before the project begins.
Record the Conversation
The interview is guided at the storyteller’s pace, with room for pauses, breaks and unexpected memories. The finished recording is then carefully prepared and delivered privately.
You do not need to know exactly what to say
Begin with the person whose voice you want to preserve, a part of life you want to remember or a story you do not want your family to lose.
It might be a parent or grandparent reflecting on their childhood, someone remembering migration or military service, a family member explaining the photographs in an album, or your own account of the people and experiences that shaped you.
There is no speech to prepare and no need to remember every date. Breadcrumbs will help you choose the right kind of recording and gently shape the conversation around what matters most.
Your first enquiry is obligation-free. You do not need to choose a service before getting in touch.
Your Questions, Answered
-
A general idea is enough. Tell Breadcrumbs whose voice you want to preserve and why it matters to you. The planning conversation will help identify the people, places, periods and themes that could guide the interview.
We will help you establish the important points during the planning process so that, when it comes time to record, you can relax and feel confident.
-
No formal preparation is required. Looking through photographs, letters or familiar objects beforehand can help memories surface, but there is no speech to write and dates do not need to be remembered perfectly.
Research-led projects involve more preparation because the questions are developed around an agreed subject and its historical context.
-
Breadcrumbs records video and audio together as the standard approach. This preserves not only the storyteller’s voice, but also their expressions, gestures and the personal manner in which they tell the story.
If the storyteller would feel more comfortable without a camera, an audio-only recording can be arranged easily. The preferred format is discussed during planning and confirmed before the session.
-
Yes. A shared conversation can help the storyteller feel comfortable and allow family members to prompt one another’s memories.
Breadcrumbs will help you decide whether recording together or holding separate interviews will create the clearest and most meaningful result.
-
An interview preserves a person’s memories and perspective. The storyteller does not need to remember every detail perfectly.
If historical verification is important, a research-led service can compare parts of the story with available records and provide additional context. Personal recollection and documented evidence will be distinguished clearly.
-
Yes. The storyteller can decline any question, pause the recording, take a break or move to another subject at any time.
Known sensitivities can be discussed privately during planning so the interview can be approached with appropriate care.
-
Light editing includes technical audio cleanup, basic levelling and the removal of obvious interruptions where appropriate. It does not substantially rewrite or rearrange the conversation.
The aim is to improve listening quality while preserving the storyteller’s meaning, personality and natural voice.
-
Yes. Photographs, letters, albums and treasured objects can be used as prompts during an interview. They can also be researched, digitised, preserved or incorporated into a larger audio or film project.
Any additional work is clearly scoped and itemised before the project begins.
-
Yes. Memory Capture can be a meaningful gift for a birthday, anniversary, retirement, reunion or other family occasion.
The person being recorded must understand and agree to participate before the session is confirmed. If you would like the occasion to remain a surprise, Breadcrumbs can help you plan an appropriate way to introduce the gift.
-
Sessions can be recorded at the Breadcrumbs studio in Adelaide CBD or at a suitable home or other agreed location.
The space should be comfortable and reasonably quiet. Any travel or location costs are explained and approved before booking.
-
Yes. The finished recording or film is delivered privately and is not published by Breadcrumbs.
You decide who receives the finished work. Client interviews, photographs, documents and films are never used for marketing, a portfolio or another public purpose without separate written permission.
-
Finished recordings and films are delivered digitally for you to download and keep. The delivery format and any physical storage requested are confirmed in the project scope.
Breadcrumbs is not a permanent-storage service, so you should retain your own copies after delivery. Temporary retention and deletion arrangements will be explained before the project begins.
-
Yes. Interviews can be combined with genealogy research and the digitisation or preservation of photographs, letters, albums, home videos and other family material.
Bringing these services together can preserve both the family’s records and the first-hand memories that explain who and what they represent.
-
Benjamin will respond personally and ask any questions needed to understand the person, story and intended outcome. He will then recommend the most suitable service.
You will receive a written scope covering the interview, location, deliverables, timing and price before making a commitment. Nothing outside that agreed scope is undertaken without your approval.
